  • “Friendly staff, no attitude, love this gym!”

  • Great local gym with a laid-back and friendly vibe. The mix of gym, classes and squash makes this a great value way to keep fit too.

  • When I first started at Hiscoes my goal was to get fit after letting myself go somewhat. I found the atmosphere really friendly, with a great range of programs. Then I noticed a sign advertising free squash coaching for members.

I have played squash for years and found it really enjoyable. Lately however, I found my game was not improving. I have never had formal lessons and just picked up the game by playing with friends. I reached a reasonable level without being really good.
As the course was free I had nothing to lose, except perhaps a few bad habits. I enrolled and started the next Saturday morning. There were four of us with Ollie, the coach. It lasted for just an hour and I was amazed how simple the basics appeared to be. Things like how to hold the racquet and how to swing it were explained in very simple terms.
At the end of the six week course I enrolled in the Development course. It was a slightly more advanced six week course which built on the skills learnt. After that I approached the coach for someone one on one lessons as I was really keen to keep improving. He quickly arranged them and I really started to progress. I could see improvement each week. I then had the problem of finding people to play.

Hiscoes had a simple remedy for me. They run a round robin competition each Saturday afternoon where you are graded and played other people of a similar or slightly better standard. Apart from meeting new people the competition was great fun and my general game improved quickly. The coach came to the round robin and watched everyone play. At the next one on one lesson the coach would address any issue he spotted with my game, hastening my improvement. I am now ready to take the next step and will be playing in the next pennant competition. I am really looking forward to it. I found the Hiscoes series of graduated instruction really helpful and I think it is the ideal way to either take up squash or improve your game. Thank you Hiscoes!

    Jon G,
  • First gym I’ve been to and actually enjoyed going. As the reviews before me say, it’s not about showing off it’s just a friendly place where people go to work out

  • Have been a member of several gyms around Sydney and this is by far the best if you want to train in a real gym with soul and human beings in – not an identikit glass and chrome globogym. Rates are very reasonable with the added bonus of free off peak squash for members – worth the membership alone if you are a regular player. The staff are great and go out of their way to help. It is a very personal service – they quickly know you by name and always remember past interactions. Very happy with my 2 years membership here and have continued even when moving out of Surry Hills.

  • Great gym. Lots variety. Friendly staff. Clean. They give you a towel. Well equipped. A really good city gym with all you need from free weights, agility gear, space to move, loved it!

    Casual Gym User,
  • Fantastic Gym. Trainers go the extra mile to help you to achieve your goals, not like one of those chain gyms that sign you up and then forget about you. Great staff, great equipment and one of the only places left to still play squash.

  • Love this gym. I signed up this year for the classes. They have all the normal gym machines, squash courts and morning, evening and weekend classes. It’s not a ‘showy’ gym either, which I love

  • We’ve been members at Hiscoes for over 10 years and have mostly attended exercise classes including Body Pump, step, pilates and yoga. Hiscoes is a down to earth, conveniently located gym, which has enabled us to train together and maintain our weight and fitness targets over a long period. The staff and trainers are friendly, informed and supportive and the relaxed atmosphere facilitates good social contact and allows people of a wide range of ages to feel welcome. We are fitter and more fabulous because of

    Rob & Maria,
  • Ollie has changed my whole squash game, my technique and my approach to playing that will ensure that I will always keep improving. His ability to break down the game and the right technique and impart that on his students is fantastic. He gives you the tools to take away and use so that you can think for yourself especially when your game is not going to plan.

  • My game has undertaken a remarkable transformation over the last six months, and this is solely due to Ollie’s coaching. There are many aspects of Ollie’s squash coaching that are remarkable. His patience, his ever evolving advice that fixes problems specific to the individual, his love and passion for the game. But additionally, what makes Ollie such a brilliant coach is his ability to think beyond the physical and into the mental realm of the game. In this respect, Ollie becomes not just a coach in the game of squash, but in the game of life. The positive outcomes in both while being tutored by Ollie are evident.

    Ben ,
  • I really love group training with MyGym. I’ve done classes before and the most anyone ever said to me was ‘hello’ or give me a nod. There’s something different about this kind of training, everyone is so friendly here and I really like that.

  • Just wanted to pass on my thanks and recommendation for personal training at Hiscoes. I have worked with Michael Moore for over 4 years now and the 2 training sessions I do with him, combined with my 2 spin classes each week, I can honestly say at age 45 I have never been so pleased with my level of fitness and my body tone as I am today. I would never have achieved these results without working with a personal trainer. – Jason

  • Amazing place. The trainers really want the best for you. Its nice to go to this little gym rather than a huge chain which tries to stop you from leaving. The classes are great with a wide variety and times to suit the working professional.

  • I love this gym. How couldn’t I? It is great to go to a gym where the staff know you… it can turn on you sometimes though – when they catch you doing a really quick workout!

  • I’ve been a member of Hiscoes, well close to 8 years now, and what I really like the most is the unpretentiousness of the place. You go into a lot of other gyms and the weights rooms can be really intimidating, but not at Hiscoes, there’s a total lack of attitude here.

  • I’ve been a member of this gym on and off for nearly 15 years now. It’s been great for me because there are options for whatever level you’re at. When I first started I’d never looked at a weight before, let alone picked one up! So I started doing classes and have moved around the gym from there. It’s really supportive and there’s something for everyone.

  • I’ve been training and working here for ten years. In terms of training, what I really love about Hiscoes is that no-one ever stares at me when I’m doing my workout, people are polite and try not to get in your way and the weights and machines I want are always available. And I like that because it’s been around for a while the variety of equipment is really good, we get new stuff every year but we’ve kept the best of the old stuff too. It’s a really good gym to do weight training in.
